Nu pot exprima in cuvinte ceea ce am simtit in acele momente.

Afterhills … and the beautiful story goes on

Afterhills 2019, the largest festival in the Moldova region of Romania and the 3rd after the Electric Castle and Summer Well music festivals which was accessible to the hearing impaired people, was also concluded. What can I say now at the end? Except I’m happy …

I am happy that what I initially believed at Electric Castle to be just an “experiment” or marketing image turned out to be a serious initiative that continued. I am happy that finally, in my country, there are people with decision-making power who want to help the other persons with special needs and to make them accessible such events, to include them into a normal social life, to offer them hope, delight and support in a path of life full of sorrows, problems and ignorance that somehow made them to isolate in their own world, in the world of silence. Believe me that in almost 3 years since I got involved in the field of music to do something for them at least at locally level, I heard many promises … but only promises, I saw a lot of indifference, I’ve got many doors closed in my face …

I am happy because if only a few months ago I was still watching on youtube various festivals in other countries translated into sign language for the deaf audience present there and still wondering … when will this happen to my country? will it ever be done? will anyone will involve and finnaly do something? … look, they were made also in Romania, and there were already 3 important events, and I was there on stage at 2 of them. I have translated, I have interpreted, I have danced with the deaf audience, with my parents, with all the others and I have experienced all the joy and emotion of music, of music beyond sound.

I am happy about all the campaigns that have been carried out in the online web and social media related to this accessibility by the organizers and those directly involved, but also by the independent press that mentioned the initiative in a paragraph in this article and had a good opinion about it.

I am happy because at the Afterhills festival people with normal hearing came to me from the audience and they were surprised about what I was doing on stage for these deaf people, they congratulated me and encouraged me to continue this work. And even the members of some bands that I translated for! I cannot express in words what I felt in those moments. I felt that finally there is a unity, there is empathy and understanding for this community of people where I was born and raised. And the fact that some people unknown to me come and tell you that they appreciate your work and enjoy the music with deaf people, there are things for me that can only make me to go ahead and continue to do my job even better. I saw from the stage, there was no difference between the normal and the deaf audience … they were all holding hands in the air and moving in the same way, in one rhythm … what can I say more …

At Afterhills I had the pleasure of personally meeting many deaf people who are living in the area of Moldova and whom I only knew from the online environment. Although fewer people came on the first evening and were quite skeptical of what will going to happen, in the second and in third evenings they came in much larger number. Meanwhile they announced their relatives, friends and some of them also came with their children … we were there a big family and we enjoyed this festival together. Along with my colleagues, sign language interpreters, Eliza and Bogdan from ANSR Bucharest, I translated live on stage into the language the songs of the Les Elephants Bizarres, Jurjak, Subcarpati and Suie Paparude band during the 3 days of the festival. But after my every day performance I stayed with this big family for a long time and I translated to them there near the stage, the songs of other bands that followed. I felt so much energy, so much joy … they were so excited … they “heard” live music for the first time in their life, they were for the first time in their life at a music festival and they lived every moment. A door was opened to them, they were offered a gift that filled their hearts and souls with happiness and hope.

It was so beautiful and we lived together the magic of music without barriers. But now they want more, they want more bands to be translated into sign language, they want the performers’ stage to be closer to the main stage, they want a larger video panel to be installed and the image of the interpreter to be projected on it. Surely, these things will be done in the future. It is important that the normality has started and that there has been a continuity of these festivals in terms of accessibility for deaf people and I am convinced that in the future many more such events will follow both in Bucharest and in the big cities in my country. Music is for everyone!

I would like to once again give my deepest thanks to the organizers and all those involved who made this music festival accessible for deaf people and not least, to Alexandra, an extraordinary person who was permanently with us, coordinated the entire team of sign language interpreters and took care of us. We are still at the beginning but the future will be fantastic!

See you all at the next festival!
